2021 Rio Camp: Day 3

Oct 27, 2021

I woke up in time for breakfast!

After breakfast we met up with Tung a fellow camper that knew where the laundry service was. He's a blue belt front CTA headquarters in San Jose. We walked a few blocks with our dirty gis and dropped them off with our best attempt at Portuguese. We successfully conveyed our hotel, room number, names, and pronto! I came back later that day to find that my 190 reais had gotten me 4 gis and a bag of clothes washed, dried, folded and delivered to my room. Not bad for about $34! Morning class was no gi where we worked on closed guard arm clamp from there we worked triangles, arm drags, and americana from guard. I rolled with Endo and Travis from Ohio. We met Travis in 2016 when he and his brother Trevor joined us on the first Rio camp. They both returned in 2018, and we were the only 3 time campers this leg of the camp. Travis is a brown belt that kindly let me work. I also trained with Danielle, a purple belt from Alaska! She and her husband were both on the trip. She is considerably smaller than me but has a sharp game. After training, we quickly showered grabbed our gis and grabbed some acai before loading into vans for today's adventure. We crossed a crazy long bridge to enter the Niteroi area. We went far into the hills to catch a view of the city. We were greeted by a loud bird that seemed to enjoy chasing people. It's called a Seriema and it sounded like a dinosaur. We had a great view over the Niteroi area. We then headed back down to get some Brazilian food for dinner. It was a buffet with lots of grilled meat, crepe bar, pasta bar, sushi, many sides and desserts. Now that we were completely stuffed of course it was time to train. We pulled on our gis to train at Alessandro and Jessica Caroline's school a Caio Terra affiliate in Rio. I had trained here in 2016 when Caroline was maybe a blue belt. She is now a black belt world champion and helps run the school. They showed De La Riva ball and chain triangle. It was tight space with our camp and their students. It was exciting to see students mix together training hard. My hand was still in bad shape and another camper and I hit heads during drilling so that was enough for me to sit out for the training. I still have a week and a half of 2 a days to survive! We wrapped up training and made the drive back to the hotel. A quick stop for nighttime acai (none for me) and we called it a night.
